ROOTS OF LEVIATHAN

The first Leviathan Clothing Industry was founded in 1909 by the Leviathan Corporation of Melbourne. Its headquarter, the Leviathan Building, was realized in 1918 and inspired by designs of clothing emporia in London: in particular the London Whitely Building. The largest part of it was structured as The Leviathan Clothing Store and it was the first major department store constructed in the central city which began to match the scale and lavishness of similar stores such as Moore’s (1910-13) and the Colosseum (1915) being constructed in Chapel Street, Prahran. Striking aspects of this Edwardian Baroque design were the enormous consoles, with their wreaths and dripping foliated detail, and the original white cement finish to the building’s reinforced concrete and austerely modern façade. Leviathan Building was built in the interwar period in the art-deco style. It was designed by Harry Tompkins who created an elaborate mix of arts and crafts with art noveau, art-deco, mannerist, baroque and Chicagoesque motifs. The deep cornice is supported by fanciful scroll like eaves brakets giving the building an frivolous and delightful tone. The attic storey has a smaller cornice and expresses the vertical spandrels of the buildings construction by indenting the string course to show the main load bearing points of the frame. The parapet features art noveau sign writing. Leviathan Building is considered a landmark of architecture in Australia. After a long gap, in 1969, the Western Australian UWM Corporation of Perth bought the trademarks of legendary Leviathan Clothing Industry and made LEVIATHAN® breath again by UWM World Company Limited based in Cocos Keeling Islands.
