Leviathan and EOT Contribute to Physics on Boat PDF

ImageLeviathan sponsored the final event in the 2008 “Fisica in Barca” (Physics on a boat) series takes place in La Spezia, Italy, on 4 to 6 June 2008. This educational show aimed at college students has called in several Italian ports since its start in Trieste last 28 April. The focus of the show is Adriatica, a boat whose round-the-world trip, turned by a mainstream TV channel into a travelling geographical documentary, has made her extremely popular with the Italian public. In each port call students have been able to watch experiments and attend talks and exhibitions. Physical principles are illustrated, where possible, with examples from the world of sailing and hands-on demonstrations on board.

Environmental Ocean Team and The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS), are going to make a significant contribution to the final event in La Spezia. On Thursday 5th June and Friday 6th June EOT will hold classes about boat physics, navigation, meteorology and climatology and then take the students to sea on one of its sailing boats. During these mini-cruises, a range of oceanographic measurements will be demonstrated in cooperation with the ENEA Research Lab sited in nearby Lerici. In the evening of the 6th, a public debate on Oceans, Climate and Energy at the Allende Centre in La Spezia will see the participation of scientists who are also EOT members such as Roberto Meloni, Marco Bianucci of CNR/INFM, and Paolo Cipollini of NOCS. A short documentary on Climate starring world-class sailor (and EOT Director) Giovanni Soldini (who has recently triumphed in the solo Artemis Transatlantic race) will also be shown and commented, possibly by Giovanni himself.
